Understanding Jet Streams

Jet streams are narrow bands of strong wind in the upper atmosphere, typically at FL300-FL400 (30,000-40,000 ft). They can reach speeds over 150 knots and significantly affect flight times:

Tailwind
Flying with the jet stream can reduce flight time significantly
Headwind
Flying against adds time and fuel consumption
Turbulence Zone
Jet stream edges often have Clear Air Turbulence (CAT)
