About Zürich Airport
Zurich's Alpine proximity creates föhn winds and occasional mountain turbulence. Winter brings fog and snow challenges.
Is Zurich Airport turbulent?
Zurich's proximity to the Alps creates unique weather challenges. The Föhn wind, a warm, dry downslope wind from the Alps, can cause significant turbulence on approach. Winter brings persistent high fog (Hochnebel) that blankets the Swiss Plateau and reduces visibility for days at a time. The combination of mountain terrain and valley fog makes Zurich one of Europe's more weather-sensitive airports.
- Föhn winds from the Alps cause approach turbulence
- Winter high fog (Hochnebel) can persist for days
- Mountain terrain affects approaches from the south
What is the Föhn wind?
The Föhn is created when moist air rises over the Alps, loses its moisture as precipitation on the southern slopes, then descends warm and dry into Switzerland. This can cause sudden temperature changes and gusty, turbulent conditions. Aircraft approaching from the south may experience significant bumps when Föhn conditions are active.
When is the best time to fly from Zurich?
Late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September) offer the most reliable conditions. Winter high fog season (November-February) brings persistent visibility issues. Summer is generally good but afternoon thunderstorms occasionally develop. Föhn events can occur year-round but are most common in spring and autumn.
